Are you really growing? These are the 8 ways to find out.
Throughout Scripture, one word is consistently used to describe the advancing Christian life.
That word is “walk.”
It is a concept that appears in Scripture many times and speaks to many aspects of Christian life. Odds are you’ve read several of these yourself:
“…and walk in love…” Ephesians 5:2
“…walk by the Spirit…” Galatians 5:16
“…walk worthy of the Lord…” Colossians 1:10
“…walk just as he walked.” 1 John 2:6
These are just a fraction of the dozens of instances of this language in the Bible, and the takeaway is clear: God designed us to progress. And the process of this advancement is often called discipleship. In short, every Christian “walk” has a pathway that leads men and women to be more like Jesus Christ.
We call this the Discipleship Pathway.
It stands to reason, then, that the progression of Christ-followers along the Discipleship Pathway should be observable. With this premise in mind, LifeWay Research set out to measure the observable traits of discipleship. The study became the largest of its kind, and the takeaways were clear: discipleship is observable and measurable in the beliefs, actions, and desires of Christians.
Specifically, there are eight consistent markers along the Discipleship Pathway that appeared over and over again in the research.
We call these markers signposts.
Okay then, you may be wondering, why does this matter? The answer is surprisingly simple. If discipleship growth is measurable, then the Christian “walk” along the Discipleship Pathway can be structured to ensure that growth will take place. In other words, the Discipleship Pathway de-mystifies discipleship.
What are the eight signposts? And how do we follow the Discipleship Pathway?
We’re glad you asked. Bible Studies for Life invites you to join us for Discipleology, a 10-part audio teaching series that explains the purpose behind the Discipleship Pathway. Join hosts Michael Kelley (LifeWay’s Director of Discipleship) and Andrew Hudson (Brand Manager, Bible Studies for Life) with special guest Scott McConnell (Director of LifeWay Research) as they unpack how all eight signposts along the Discipleship Pathway can be understood and implemented in the lives of every disciple.
